Citrus reticulata (=Mandarino)

Citrus reticulata, the mandarin, is a fruit tree of the Rutaceae family native to tropical eastern Asia.

Characteristics
A medium sized tree usually 4-6 m tall, varying with variety and growing conditions, with a dense, rounded crown, flexible branches and glossy green foliage. The leaves are oval to lanceolate, glossy dark green above and paler beneath, and are held all year. White, sweetly scented flowers open in spring in small terminal clusters and are visited by bees, followed by the sweet, easily peeled fruit that ripens from autumn to winter.

Growing and care
Full sun, shelter from cold wind and fertile, well drained soil. Water and feed regularly through the growing season; it needs protection below about -3 °C. Prune lightly after harvest to open the crown and remove suckers.

Uses
Citrus collections, Mediterranean gardens and terraces, planted out in mild areas and grown in large pots elsewhere so it can be moved under cover.
