Cercis chinensis 'Avondale', the Chinese redbud 'Avondale', is a compact ornamental selection much valued for its spectacular spring flowering and decorative foliage.

Characteristics
Its most striking feature is the abundant pink-purple flowering that appears in spring before the leaves, the flowers opening directly on the branches and even the trunk, a phenomenon called cauliflory, for a remarkable effect. The leaves are heart shaped, bright green in spring and summer, turning golden yellow in autumn, dense and an excellent foil to the flowers. The habit is upright and compact, reaching about 3-4 m in height and 2-3 m across.

Growing and care
Sun or light shade and well drained soil, sheltered from cold wind; hardy and drought tolerant once established, but it dislikes root disturbance. Prune after flowering, only to shape it.

Uses
A focal shrub or small tree for small gardens, courtyards, entrances and mixed borders, and excellent in a large container.
