Catalpa bungei

Catalpa bungei is an ornamental deciduous tree native to China, usually grown as a standard with a neat, rounded head.

Characteristics
A tree of moderate size reaching about 6-9 m, with a broad, rounded crown, horizontal branches and a short, thick trunk. The leaves are large and heart shaped, glossy dark green above and paler beneath, in opposite pairs, 10-20 cm long. Showy flowers appear in spring or early summer in large terminal clusters, trumpet shaped and creamy white with yellow shading and purple spots in the throat, followed by long, slender bean like capsules.

Growing and care
Sun and deep, fresh, well drained soil, sheltered from strong wind, which can tear the large leaves; hardy and tolerant of urban conditions. Prune in late winter, shortening the previous year's shoots to keep the head compact.

Uses
A formal tree for streets, squares, courtyards and small gardens, valued for dense shade in a limited space.
