Callistemon citrinus
Callistemon citrinus, the crimson bottlebrush, is an evergreen shrub of the Myrtaceae family from Australia, widely grown for its striking flowering and aromatic, lemon scented foliage.
Characteristics
A bushy evergreen shrub with narrow, leathery, mid green leaves that release a citrus scent when crushed. In spring and summer it carries the spectacular brush shaped inflorescences along the stems, from bright red to pink or white depending on the form, which readily attract butterflies and bees.
Growing and care
Robust and easy: it adapts to a range of climates, preferring full sun and well drained soil, and tolerates drought and salt spray once established. It withstands light frost, so in colder areas a sheltered position is best. Prune lightly after flowering to keep it compact and encourage more flowering wood.
Uses
Mediterranean and seaside gardens, informal hedges and screens, mixed borders, and large containers on terraces and balconies.
