Buxus sempervirens
Buxus sempervirens, common box, is an evergreen shrub prized for its dense foliage and its willingness to be clipped into any shape.
Characteristics
An evergreen shrub varying from 1 to 6 m depending on conditions and pruning, compact and dense, with closely set, horizontally spreading branches. The leaves are small, oval and leathery, glossy dark green above and paler beneath, in opposite pairs, forming an even, solid cover. The small yellow-green flowers open in spring in little clusters and are followed by inconspicuous capsules.
Growing and care
Sun or shade and any well drained soil, including calcareous ground; very hardy, long lived and shade tolerant. Clip once or twice a year to keep the shape, mulch to keep the roots cool and ensure good air circulation to limit box blight.
Uses
The classic plant for formal hedges, edging, parterres and topiary, for shady borders and for containers flanking entrances and steps.
