Aesculus x carnea 'Briotii'

Aesculus x carnea 'Briotii', the red horse chestnut, is a hybrid of Aesculus hippocastanum and Aesculus pavia.

Characteristics
A medium sized deciduous tree reaching about 10-15 m, with a broad, rounded crown and a short, sturdy trunk with grey-brown bark that furrows with age. The leaves are large and palmate with five to seven lanceolate leaflets, dark green turning yellow or brown in autumn. Its feature is the flowering: showy upright panicles of deep red flowers, sometimes with pink or white tones, in late spring, followed by nearly smooth capsules.

Growing and care
Sun or partial shade and fresh, well drained soil; hardy and tolerant of urban conditions, and less prone than the common horse chestnut to disfiguring leaf problems. Water while establishing and prune only to remove damaged branches.

Uses
An excellent flowering tree for medium sized gardens, avenues, squares and parks, where the red flowers create a strong spring display.
