Acer pseudoplatanus
Acer pseudoplatanus, the sycamore maple, is a deciduous tree native to central and southern Europe.
Characteristics
A medium to large tree reaching about 20-30 m, with a broad, rounded crown. The trunk is usually short and sturdy, with grey-brown bark that becomes furrowed with age. The leaves are large, palmate and lobed, resembling those of the plane tree, dark green in summer and turning yellow or brown before falling. In spring it bears small greenish flowers in dense hanging clusters, inconspicuous but scented and visited by bees, followed by winged samaras.
Growing and care
Sun or partial shade and any well drained soil; extremely tough, it withstands wind, salt spray and exposed sites, and needs almost no care once established. Prune in the dormant season to remove damaged branches.
Uses
A large shade tree for parks, avenues, windbreaks and coastal or mountain plantings.
