Acer platanoides 'Crimson King'

Acer platanoides 'Crimson King' is a Norway maple selection known for its deep, rich foliage, which provides strong contrast in the landscape.

Characteristics
A large deciduous tree 12-18 m tall with a crown 9-12 m across, rounded, dense and broad. The leaves are large, palmate and lobed like those of the common Norway maple, but of an intense burgundy red that is held for most of the season. In spring it produces small yellow-green flowers in dense clusters, inconspicuous but scented and attractive to bees, followed by winged samaras.

Growing and care
Sun is essential for the darkest leaf colour; it accepts a wide range of well drained soils and is very hardy. Water while establishing, then only in prolonged drought. Prune in the dormant season to remove damaged branches and to balance the crown.

Uses
A specimen and avenue tree for parks, large gardens and streets, used as a colour accent against green foliage.
