Acer palmatum 'Skeeters Broom'
Acer palmatum 'Skeeter's Broom' is a compact, attractive Japanese maple valued for its dense habit and distinctive foliage.
Characteristics
A slow growing small tree or shrub reaching about 1.5-2 m in height and width, with a compact, rounded, densely branched outline. The palmate, lobed leaves are smaller than in most Japanese maples, dark green in summer and turning red, orange or yellow in autumn. Insignificant red-brown flowers in spring are followed by small winged samaras. The bark is smooth and silvery grey when young, becoming fissured with age.
Growing and care
Well drained, fertile soil with neutral to slightly acid pH, avoiding compaction and waterlogging, in partial shade sheltered from the hottest sun, which can scorch the foliage. Water regularly in dry spells, especially in the first years. Prune while dormant, in autumn or winter, only to remove damaged branches or to shape it; feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser. Hardy in USDA zones 5-8.
Uses
Ideal for small and rock gardens, as a centrepiece in Japanese gardens, along path edges and in containers on terraces and balconies.
