Phyllostachys nigra

Phyllostachys nigra, the black bamboo, is the most ornamental species of the genus: its canes emerge green and within one or two seasons turn a deep glossy black that contrasts with the light green foliage.

Characteristics
It reaches 4-7 m in height with canes 2-4 cm across, elegant and slightly arching at the top. The leaves are narrow, light and evergreen, giving the clump an airy look. It is hardy to about -18 °C.

Growing and care
It prefers partial shade or gentle sun and a fertile, cool, well drained soil; cane colour is deeper in a bright position. Like all Phyllostachys it is a running bamboo and must be contained with a rhizome barrier. Removing the oldest canes and the lower branches shows off the colour of the stems.

Uses
A striking specimen in oriental style gardens, courtyards and patios, as a scenic backdrop lit at night, or in large containers where its contained habit is an advantage.
