Citrus sinensis (=Arancio)

Citrus sinensis, the sweet orange, is a fruit tree of the Rutaceae family native to eastern Asia.

Characteristics
A medium sized tree reaching 4-8 m depending on variety and conditions, with a dense, rounded crown, flexible branches and glossy green foliage. The leaves are oval to lanceolate, glossy dark green above and paler beneath, evergreen. White, strongly scented flowers open in spring in small terminal clusters and are visited by bees, followed by the round to slightly oval fruit, which ripens from late autumn through winter and can hang on the tree for months.

Growing and care
Full sun, shelter from cold wind and fertile, well drained soil, with regular water and feeding in the growing season; protect below about -3 °C. Prune lightly after harvest.

Uses
Mediterranean gardens and terraces, citrus collections and orangery style displays in large pots, and a classic subject for courtyards.
