Chamaerops humilis, the dwarf or Mediterranean fan palm, is an ornamental native to the Mediterranean, valued for its elegance, toughness and ease of cultivation.

Characteristics
Size: it reaches a maximum height of about 2 m, usually forming several suckering stems. Foliage: deep green, fan shaped leaves with toothed stalks. Flowers: small yellow flowers gathered in inflorescences in spring, followed by small brown fruits.

Growing and care
A very resilient plant that withstands temperatures as low as about -10 °C. It suits gardens and terraces as well as bright interiors, and prefers well drained soil in full sun. Water sparingly, letting the soil dry between waterings, and remove only the dry outer leaves.

Uses
Mediterranean and seaside gardens, gravel and rock schemes, low screens of suckering clumps, and large containers on terraces and by entrances.
