Abelia x grandiflora Kaleidoscope ®
Abelia x grandiflora 'Kaleidoscope'® is an ornamental selection valued for its variegated foliage and long flowering season.
Characteristics
A small evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub, depending on climate, about 60-90 cm tall and as wide, with a compact, rounded, densely branched habit. The small, oval, glossy leaves are variegated, with golden yellow margins around a bright green centre in spring and summer; in autumn and winter the foliage takes on red, orange and bronze tones, hence the kaleidoscope effect. Small, fragrant, tubular white to pinkish white flowers open from late spring to autumn, often until the first frosts.
Growing and care
Sun or partial shade and well drained soil, including clay, sandy or calcareous ground. Drought tolerant once established; hardy in USDA zones 6-9. Prune lightly after flowering; mulch and feed lightly in spring.
Uses
Mixed borders, low hedges, specimen planting, containers and small gardens.
